Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Its islands and peninsulas hide around 20 monasteries, some dating from the 14th century, whose round churches are decorated with brilliantly coloured murals of biblical scenes and saints.
From the lakeside town of Bahir Dar, a short drive leads to the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay, “smoking water”), which are at their most powerful after the rains. Papyrus tankwa boats, pelicans and fish eagles complete the scene.
