Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Swahili settlements on the coast. There are no cars — transport is by foot, donkey or dhow — and life moves to the rhythm of the tides and the call to prayer.
Visitors stay in restored Swahili houses or in beach retreats on nearby Manda and Shela, sailing by dhow to sandbanks, snorkelling and exploring the ruins at Takwa.
