The Danakil Depression lies more than 100 m below sea level in the Afar region and is one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth. At Dallol, hydrothermal activity creates fields of yellow, green and orange sulphur and salt formations, while the flat white expanse of Lake Asale is worked by Afar salt miners whose camel caravans still carry blocks of salt to the highlands.

For the adventurous, an evening hike to the rim of Erta Ale can reveal one of the world’s few persistent lava lakes (activity varies). Expeditions are run with experienced local teams, armed escorts and 4×4 vehicles.
