Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area. Here the Victoria Nile forces its way through a gap only 7 metres wide before plunging 43 metres — a thunderous sight and one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth.
North of the river, the savanna supports Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant, lion, buffalo and Uganda kob. Boat trips from Paraa to the foot of the falls pass hippos and huge crocodiles, and the Nile delta is one of the best places to look for the shoebill. On the way from Kampala, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary allows visitors to track white rhino on foot.
