What a Day on Safari Actually Looks Like

From the 5:30 wake-up call to the campfire under the stars — a typical day in the Maasai Mara, hour by hour.

People often ask us what they will actually be doing all day on safari. The answer is shaped by the animals: they are most active in the cool hours around dawn and dusk, so that is when you head out.

5:30am — wake-up call

A friendly “jambo” at your tent flap, with a tray of coffee or tea. It is still dark, and cool enough for a fleece.

6:15am — morning game drive

You set off as the sky turns pink. This is prime time for predators: lions returning from a night’s hunting, hyenas at a kill, perhaps a cheetah surveying the plains from a termite mound. Many guests take a packed breakfast and eat it in the bush.

11:00am — back to camp

By late morning the heat builds and animals seek shade. Back at camp, there is brunch or lunch, then time to rest, swim, read or edit photos.

4:00pm — afternoon drive

After afternoon tea, you head out again, often to a different area. As the light turns golden, elephants move towards water and the plains come alive again.

6:30pm — sundowner

Your guide stops at a scenic spot for a drink as the sun sets over the savanna — one of the most memorable rituals of any safari.

8:00pm — dinner and campfire

Dinner under the stars, stories around the fire and the sounds of the night: lions roaring in the distance, hyenas whooping, and perhaps a hippo grazing near your tent.
